2018's first MCU offering this year is Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman as the title character, reprising his role first introduced in Captain America: Civil War.
Like all of the MCU films dating back to Iron Man back in 2008, the visual effects are absolutely stunning. The story contains the right amount of humor (with plenty of laugh out loud moments), and Michael B. Jordan is great as the villain Killmonger. Typically the MCU has a villain problem, but this is more on the Loki side of good than the typical Marvel baddie.
Does it follow a lot of the standard MCU tropes, especially for stand-alone origin films? Yes, but that's okay. With this movie, it's all about the ride, and it's a fun one. This film is giving so many great young African-American actors a chance to shine, including Lupita Nyong'o and Daniel Kaluuya, as well as director Ryan Coogler, coming off of previously directing Creed in 2015 (this marks the third time Coogler has worked with Michael B. Jordan). Also, make sure to stay for the post-credits. The first of two is far and away my favorite post-credits scene in a Marvel film in quite some time.
Black Panther is rated PG-13 for violence and language. What are your thoughts on the film? Please comment below, and as always, be civil.
