The ideas of space and time get turned on their head's in Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time, based on the 1962 beloved novel written by Madeleine L'Engle.
After a time travel experiment causes scientist Mr. Murray (Chris Pine) to go missing for several years, his daughter Meg (Storm Reid), her adopted brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and school friend Calvin (Levi Miller) go on a quest to find him and bring him home. Joining them on this journey are three magical beings, Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon).
Looking at this as an adult watching a film geared towards kids, and knowing nothing about the source material, I was left asking a lot of questions. What was the purpose of the Calvin character? How did Charles Wallace know about the three Mrs. in the first place? Most importantly for me though, is how scattered the third act was. There was about a half hours worth of material that got packed into fifteen to twenty, and that extra time could have been used the clarify a lot. The film is visually stunning, and it is a well-acted film (my favorite being Charles Wallace as the precocious six-year-old who played like he was in his forties). I just wish that it answered some of these questions to make the whole story clearer. In the end, I would recommend this based on the performances and visual aspects.
A Wrinkle in Time is rated PG for thematic elements and peril. What are your thoughts? Follow me at facebook.com/moviebirb or twitter.com/moviebirb and let me know your thoughts.
