New Release Birb: The Meg

The Meg
Starring: Jason Statham and a Megalodon
Directed by John Turteltaub
US Release Date: 10 August 2018
My First Viewing: 9 August 2018

There are three types of bad movies. Either it's so bad it's good, just plain awful, or has good intentions but fell short of expectations. The new Jason Statham action film The Meg falls in category number three.

Statham stars as Jonas, a deep sea diver who, after a traumatic incident that left two of his companions dead, has holed himself up in Thailand. When a new crew of divers led by Jonas' ex-wife Lori (Jessica McNamee) is stranded after an unknown entity attacks their submarine, Jonas is called back into duty by the Zhang Corporation led by ex-partner Mac (Cliff Curtis) and Zhang (Winston Chao). What attacked the sub? It's a Megalodon. The once-thought extinct 70-foot sea predator is on the prowl, and it's up to Jonas and the rest of the Zhang team to stop it.

What works in the film is Statham as Jonas playing the role you usually see Statham play in any action movie he stars in. You pay to see Statham kick some butt, whether it be bad guys or in this case, a 70-foot shark. The young actress playing Zhang's granddaughter (Shuya Sophia Cai) is the highlight of most if not all of the best comedic moments. However, the film lacks a sense of direction where shaving off twenty minutes from its bloated 113-minute runtime could have made it a tighter film. The character of Lori isn't even necessary, only serving as a bridge for Jonas to fall for Zhang's daughter Suyin (Bingbing Li), as well as a motivator for Jonas to agree to this mission.

It's obvious that this is not a film catered toward an American audience. Carrying a reported $150M budget, it is all but banking that it will make heaps of cash in the Chinese market. If you're looking for a fun time and like watching Statham in action, check out this movie. Just go in with lowered expectations.

The Meg is rated PG13 for shark violence and frightening moments, also involving sharks. What are your thoughts? Follow me on facebook and instagram and let me know what you thought.

New Release Birb- A Fantastic Woman

A Fantastic Woman (Una Mujer Fantástica) Starring: Daniela Vega and Francisco Reyes Directed By Sebastián Lelio US Release Date: November 17, 2017 My First Viewing: March 2, 2018 A nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, A Fantastic Woman stars Daniela Vega as Marina, a woman who is dealing with grief and the prejudice of those around her life after the death of her older partner.  This is a beautiful movie that is carried by Vega. She makes this movie so profoundly powerful that you feel with her through her journey, even if this is not something a lot of people can directly relate to. Marina has a difficult enough time in her life dealing with the death of her partner Orlando (Francisco Reyes), but with this being a relationship with a much older man and a trans woman, there are added layers. Between the police, doctors, and Orlando's family, Marina has a lot to deal with, but she is strong and isn't afraid to fight for what she believes ...

New Release Birb: First Reformed

First Reformed Starring: Ethan Hawke and Amanda Seyfried Written and Directed by Paul Schrader US Release Date: May 18th, 2018 My First Viewing: May 30th, 2018 A former military officer turned Reverend deals with the struggles of guilt and despair in his own life as well as the world around us in First Reformed, starring Ethan Hawke and Amanda Seyfried.  Hawke plays Reverend Toller, who at the beginning of the film starts a one-year journal exercise to write his thoughts in the truest way possible, by putting pen to paper. In his small congregation (which is run by a superchurch run by Cedric "The Entertainer" Kyles) is Mary (Seyfried) and her husband Michael (Philip Ettinger). Mary wants to set Michael up with Reverend Toller because he is depressed about global warming and he wants her to get rid of their unborn child because he doesn't want to bring another life into this world.  This is a very deliberately paced film, but it keeps you invested. Hawke's...

New Release Brib- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Starring Eddie Redmayne and Johnny Depp Directed by David Yates US Release Date: 16 November 2018 My First Viewing: 15 November 2018 Eddie Redmayne returns in Newt Scamander and the Thirty Loose Threads David Yates returns to the Wizarding World for the sixth time in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, with a returning cast that includes Eddie Redmayne, Johnny Depp, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, and Ezra Miller, as well as newcomers Jude Law and Zoe Kravitz. While this film carries on the visual masterwork that many of the later Wizarding World films created, the overall story of the movie lacked any heft to the point where coming out of it, I could not wrap my head around all of the story arcs that were presented. At the end of the day, this ended up being nothing more than a set-up for the next film, and the next film, and so on and so on until either we come to a satisfying conclusion, or fans of the franchise just st...
